Microrobotics: Current Challenges and Future Opportunities

Abstract
Microrobotics is a relatively new field made possible by recent advances in MEMS and NEMS technologies. In this talk, some of the recent developments in the new field of microrobotics will be described. In particular, this talk will review some of the fundamental challenges and opportunities of this new emerging technology, relating them to the unique solutions we see in some of today's state-of-the-art microrobotic systems. Also, some of the emerging trends in micro- (and nano-) robotics will be discussed, and postulates on the future developments of this field will be given.
About the Speaker
Prof. Paprotny is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois, Chicago (UIC). Prior to his appointment at UIC, Dr. Paprotny was a post-doc and later a research scientist at UC Berkeley. Prof. Paprotny holds a PhD. in Computer Science from Dartmouth College, a BS and an MS degree from Arizona State University, and an engineering diploma from NKI College of Engineering. His research group at UIC is currently working on a variety of problems related to robotics, and air-microfluidics. He has published five book chapters and over 50 papers in journals and conferences, as well as is the co-author on six patents. His expertise is on design, modeling, and fabrication of mesoscale mechatronic systems using MEMS and NEMS technologies. |
